The Hanbury Fox In Private collection

14 x 10 inches
Watercolour on Bockingford

The wily fox crosses the early autumn country road at dawn, checking for vehicles and perhaps the first meal of the day. The clouds were painted wet on wet to create their soft fluid shape. The majority of the painting was painted with a brush but the grass verge was created by a lot of splatter for the grass seed heads and white gouache sprayed with water to give the soft cotton heads of the dead thistles. This created a less controlled and more free effect than if the whole thing had been painted. Splatter was also very carefully applied for the bright red berries in the hedgerows.
