The pour on effect of the paint makes the tiger look as if its emerging from the background - almost from a wall of water - or perhaps the viewer is under the surface of the water as the tigers head breaks through the surface to peer beneath. The animal looks with cool regard - not threatening but the underlying feral impulses are near to the surface.
