Burning brightIn Private collection 15 ½ x 11 ½ inches Watercolour and gouache on Bockingford The rich bold colours of the tigers head almost seem to glow as they leap out of the background. The white gouache over the darker watercolours gives a cloudy appearance to the white fur. The dramatic colours of the tigers markings create a vision of wild nature in the raw adding to the proud menacing stare and the malevolent glare of the eyes. With the pour-on technique there is no initial control of the paint so it creates a freedom in the movement of the first layer on which the rest of the painting is relying. It creates a fresh approach that the artist can’t have originally imagined – then when the paint is applied afterwards with a brushed precision, it over-paints the painting but the uncontrolled paint underneath gives it movement and uniformity which could never be created with the brush alone. The lost and found edges create the illusion of movement and of a 3D effect in the painting. As the paint has dried in movement on the paper it gives the illusion of movement in the painting. |
